Uber tapped ex-Orbitz boss Barney Harford to be its new COO

He moved to the US from Britain in 1999 to work for Expedia, where he worked with Khosrowshahi. He will oversee the core ride-hailing business world-wide, as well as food-delivery and customer-support operations, Uber said. A familiar face at Uber, he been an adviser since October, Khosrowshahi said in an email to employees. The controversies caused a significant turnover in Uber's senior management team, including the departure of Uber cofounder Travis Kalanick from the CEO job.

However, this is not the first time he's worked with Uber's new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

Harford will now report directly to Khosrowshahi in the new role, making him the second highest-ranking exec at Uber.

Natural disaster shakes areas near Iran's capital Tehran
Last month, a 7.3 magnitude natural disaster jolted the Iranian border, killing at least 620 people and injuring thousands others. A 6.2-magnitude natural disaster struck the southeastern province of Kerman on December 13, leaving at least 18 people injured.

Uber is facing a host of problems, including allegations of sexual harassment, data privacy violations, and a criminal investigation over alleged trade-secrets theft. Adding to that, the long-time travel executive has his sights set on taking the company public in 2019. Five key members of its security team also recently departed.

Barney Harford, who was CEO of travel website Orbitz Worldwide Inc, will join Uber on January 2. When both men were with Expedia, Harford helped lead Expedia's expansion into Asia from 2005 to 2009. In February 2015, Expedia announced it would acquire Orbitz for $1.3-billion in cash, part of a spate of acquisitions under Khosrowshahi.

Barney will continue to serve on the boards of United Airlines and RealSelf, where he is chairman. Then, Kalanick was still CEO and under fire for his leadership abilities.
