Dolphins TE Thomas and G Bushrod placed on injured reserve

The organization put two more starters on injured reserve Wednesday - tight end Julius Thomas and guard Jermon Bushrod, both with foot ailments - upping their total of starters or would-be starters on IR to eight. To replace them, the Dolphins have promoted Thomas Duarte and activated Eric Smith off of the IR. Smith will provide needed depth at tackle. Bushrod started the first 10 games at right guard but hasn't played since Week 11 and was awful even before getting hurt. Bushrod missed the past four games because of a foot injury after starting the first 10 games.

Thomas played in 14 games with 12 starts for the Dolphins.

Miami made Thomas a big priority this off-season trading a seventh round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for Adam Gase's former Denver tight-end.

Winter Solstice 2017: The First Day Of Winter
Of course, it's the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere where 9 hours, 32 minutes of daylight are expected. Further south, the winter solstice sun will set in Dallas at 5:25, giving residents nine hours and 59 minutes of daylight.

Meanwhile, it's hard to see how Thomas returns in 2018, given his production (41 catches, 388 yards and three touchdowns) and his contract situation (he's due $6.6 million next year, but the Dolphins can walk away from it with no salary cap pain). The entire cap number will be erased if Miami releases him during the offseason. He initially joined Miami as an undrafted college free agent in May.

Duarte has spent all of this season on the Dolphins practice squad. He has played average at best this season as he has battled nagging injuries.
