Apple may merge iPhone, iPad, Mac apps for a unified user experience

Bloomberg has reported that Apple will eventually merge the less-popular Mac App Store with the App Store for iOS. That's why there are Windows on ARM machines, as well as the Windows 10S operating system. The iOS App Store was redesigned earlier this year but the Mac App Store hasn't been refreshed since nearly three years now. "The Mac App Store is a ghost town of limited selection and rarely updated programs".

"The same approach hasn't worked almost as well on Apple's desktops and laptops". Gurman reports that Apple wants to change this by giving people a single set of apps that work uniformly across the company's products. We could expect an announcement during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) which will take place in June.

Apple is following in the footsteps of Microsoft and Google as it looks to have universal apps across the different devices and operating systems it offers. Apple customers have also long complained that some Mac apps get short shrift: while the iPhone and iPad Twitter app is regularly updated with the social network's latest features, the Mac version hasn't been refreshed recently and is widely considered substandard.

Gurman spoke to leading app developer Steven Troughton-Smith, who believes that these plans would streamline software development.

He added: "This would be the biggest change to Apple's software platform since iOS was introduced". New approach to computing Unifying the stores will allow Mac users to run iOS apps on their desktop while simultaneously encouraging developer adoption. This project is named as "Marzipan" internally and will materialise as a part of the upcoming major app update strategy. A new report from Bloomberg claims this will change as soon as next year. The project is still fluid at the moment, so the plans may shift or get cancelled outright.
