Mumbai Airport Sets Busiest Runway Record

While it does boast two runways, they intersect, which only allows to be used during any given take-off and landing. Despite its very big population Mumbai's airport only operates as a single runway airport.

In signs traffic is surging, Mumbai on Friday handled 969 flights in a 24-hour period, a world record for an airport that operates only one runway at any given point of time, the Times of India reported Sunday, citing an official at the Mumbai International Airport Ltd.

An influx of private and chartered flights helped propel the airport to the impressive mark. The aim is to reach 1,000 aircraft movements, the official told the newspaper. As a result, it is technically a single-runway facility.

In civil aviation, the norm is to record time in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, same as GMT) and Indian Standard Time is five-and-a-half hours ahead of UTC.

All flights at the Mumbai airport use the main runway. The runway has a stated capacity of 46 flights per hour, but twice on Friday, the airport hit 50 flights in an hour.

A spokesperson with the airport told the outlet that they typically handle more than 900 flights per day, and that they hope to exceed 1,000 movements in a 24-hour period soon.

A senior air traffic controller at Mumbai said the airport has had stretches of handling 10 takeoffs or landings in just 10 minutes. "Mumbai has the second highest as it crosses 50". A "right mix" is when the wind speed and visibility is good, all the aircraft involved are either A320s or B737s (similar speed and weight aircraft, that is), all are manned by pilots who are well-versed with the layout of Mumbai airport.
