Canada improves in gender parity: WEF report

The Global Gender Gap Index was first introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006 as a framework for capturing the magnitude of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress over time.

Unpaid work measures the average minutes spent per day on routine housework, shopping, care for household members, care for non-household members volunteering, travel related to household activities and other unpaid activities for men and women aged 15-64 years.

Praising Bangladesh for doing phenomenally, the report says, the country's 47th ranking is a further consolidation of "its position as the region's top performer and climbs several spots this year, recording progress across all dimensions of the economic opportunity and participation subindex". The country is in first place for equality in educational attainment between men and women, but trails in 56th place for women in parliament.

Nordic countries remain among some of the world's best for overall equality.

No doubt, the report states, India succeeded "in fully closing its primary and secondary education enrolment gender gaps for the second year running, and, for the first time has almost closed its tertiary education gender gap", but regrets, "It continues to rank fourth-lowest in the world on health and survival, remaining the world's least-improved country on this subindex over the past decade". Norway, Finland ands Sweden are all in the top five. This makes Iceland among the fastest nations to reach gender equality. WEF's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report shows that the average gap worldwide now stands at 32%, compared to an average gap of 31.7% past year.

An analysis of Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) over the past years points to a continued under-use of the ever-increasing numbers of educated women than ever before, the report said. The highest possible score is 1 and the lowest possible score is 0.

Slovenia has the smallest gap in gender earnings - with women there on average earning 80.5% of the male national average.
